RECEPTION

Welcome to Reception class!

In Reception we strive to provide a happy, calm and caring environment. We adopt a ‘child led’ approach to learning which focuses heavily on children’s interests and individual learning styles.

The ‘Reggio Emilia’ approach influences our everyday practice within Reception class. The philosophy behind the approach promotes respect, responsibility and community, and a strong emphasis on exploration and discovery.

We carefully plan our environment and curriculum to provide a range of stimulating opportunities to promote children’s development in all of the following areas:

·         Personal, Social and Emotional Development

·         Communication, Language and Literacy

·         Mathematical Development

·         Knowledge and Understanding of the World

·         Physical Development

·         Creative Development

Our environment and curriculum is based around children’s currents interests and developmental stages. We use a ‘pilot children’ system, which allows us to regularly zoom in on children’s learning. We also follow a focus story which is relevant to children’s interests. Literacy development is promoted through the use of the Read Write Inc phonics system. Our Reception staff are Miss Hardman (class teacher) and Mrs Clayton (Learning Support Practitioner).

 

At the end of Reception (the Foundation Stage), each child is assessed against a number of key areas called the Early Learning Goals (ELG). Our environment and curriculum is carefully designed to promote children’s learning and development, in order for them to achieve a good level of development. Reading

In Reception at Grace Mary, we learn to read through phonics. We use and follow the Read Write Inc. phonics scheme to build knowledge and application of sounds in words to develop vocabulary and eventually into writing.

Read Write Inc. phonics is developed in sets of sounds and we begin with set 1 in Reception.
