Our Early Years Vision:  

Within our Early Years unit we strive to provide a happy, calm and caring environment. We adopt a ‘child led’ approach to learning which focuses heavily on children’s interests and individual learning styles. The ‘Reggio Emilia’ approach influences our everyday practice within  class. The philosophy behind the approach promotes respect, responsibility and community, and a strong emphasis on exploration and discovery.

We carefully plan our environment and curriculum to provide a range of stimulating opportunities to promote children’s development in all of the following areas, which are outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage guidance produced by the Department for Education: 

·         Personal, Social and Emotional Development

·         Communication, Language and Literacy

·         Mathematical Development

·         Knowledge and Understanding of the World

·         Physical Development

·         Creative Development


Our environment and curriculum is based around children’s currents interests and developmental stages. We use a ‘pilot children’ system, which allows us to regularly zoom in on children’s learning. We also follow a focus story which is relevant to children’s interests. Literacy development is promoted through the use of the Read Write Inc phonics system. 


Focus Stories. 

Early Years planning at Grace Mary is based on children's current interests and linked to a focus story. The focus story is chosen by looking at what children's current interests are and what areas of learning we can cover. The focus story remains as a theme for as long as the children are interested in it. Take a look at our class page to find out what the children have been up to.



Our children are naturally curious and love to explore. We aim to promote their curiosity by planning weekly investigations to build upon their existing skills and knowledge of the world around us. Early Learning Goals.

At the end of Reception (the Foundation Stage), each child is assessed against a number of key areas called the Early Learning Goals (ELG). Our environment and curriculum is carefully designed to promote children’s learning and development, in order for them to achieve a good level of development. In Reception at Grace Mary, we learn to read through phonics. We use and follow the Read Write Inc. phonics scheme to build knowledge and application of sounds in words to develop vocabulary and eventually into writing.

Read Write Inc. phonics is developed in sets of sounds and we begin with set 1 in Reception.
