My name is Miss Hale, and I am the class teacher in Year 1, alongside both Mrs Clayton and Mrs Sheares. We are all very excited to learn and explore with the children this year. We use a child-led, exploratory approach alongside our knowledge-based curriculum that echoes the pedagogy practiced across key stages 1 and 2.
We have such a fabulous year ahead and I hope that all of the children are looking forward to all of the amazing things that we are going to be learning!
You will find on this class page examples of children's work, guidance and documents to support your understanding of what and how your child is learning in Year one, exciting class news and activities that we get up to!
As always, please do not hesitate to make an appointment with myself if you have any queries about our learning and we will always do our best to help!
Below are some useful links to support your child's learning, which you can logon to at any time and find some really useful activities and games.
PE will be on TUESDAY afternoons, with Mr Toone leading the session. Please ensure your child has their kit in school at all times and arrives in PE kit.
Home Reader books will now be changed on TUESDAY so please bring your book bags in on this day so a new book can be issued.
VE Day!
English
In English, we use a Talk for Writing procedure, which allows us to learn a number of stories off by heart and act this out through symbols. We then sequence, comprehend questions and write sentences that surround the book. The children have loved performing our stories and are able to understand and write sentences fluently!
The stories we have read so far:
The Gingerbread man.
The tiger who came for tea.
A range of repetitive poetry.
Princess and the Pea.
Chicken Licken.
Peace at last.
The Queens hat- our first big write!
The Storm Whale
In summer term we have currently looked at Jack and the Beanstalk and Cops and robbers which are heaps of fun!
Here is what we have been doing in our writing lessons so far...
The Queens hat (independent write and first story retell)
The Storm Whale
Maths
In maths we have been completing lots of hard work using part part whole models, bar models, number bonds and multitudes of addition proficiency. The children have been working thoroughly with practical blocks, symbols and pictures before using our skills on practice questions! Next, are our times tables in which we are practicing on number lines compiling of 10's, 5's and 2's. We are all math whizzes!

Humanities
In Geography, we have been looking at locality and focusing upon where we live! We have been looking at houses and homes, our Local area, Boroughs, County's and finally our Country too! We have recently have been looking at continents, countries and climates of the world! The UK is our current topic, looking at the countries, flags, flowers and famous flags of all four! We have Continuous Provision during humanities which consists of carousel tables full of practical activities that relate to the learning, and the children love moving around and being actively involved!
Geography- Where we live
Our local walk:
The focus of our local walk, was to find as many different variations of houses and homes we could! We were so lucky to find every home on our checklist such as Flats, Bungalows, Semi-detached, Detached, Terraced and even Caravans! This has been great for us to see the types of houses and homes we have been learning about in school in our local area!
Our local walk
Science
In Science we have been focusing on how the world changes around us, including the seasons, weather, day length and even how the water cycle works! We are currently busy with our Animals including humans topic in which is very explorative with different animal groups, the comparatives between the five and of course the human body! We are really enjoying learning all about our amazing body and each functions purpose! The children have really worked hard on applying the theoretical knowledge and placing it into context with the real world. We apply the same Continuous Provision concept which allows us to really work practically in our science lessons!

EVERYDAY MATERIALS
History of shopping!
This term we have had the chance to look at how people shopped and payed for items in the past. The children have been exploring new vocabulary such as 'goods' and 'services', compare the look and style of shopping to modern day and discover occupations and adaptations to our supermarkets of today. We even designed our own reusable bags!
History of transport
Art/DT
In art, we have been looking at a range of techniques and styles to explore all the ways pieces can be displayed as a final piece. We have been exploring a range of styles including abstract art, collages, painting using primary and secondary colours to create our final masterpieces! In DT we are currently looking at mechanisms - wheels and axles. We are designing and creating prototypes for windmills. The designs are looking fab so far and I'm sure the end results will be even better! We were able to design and plan the tools we will use before getting hands on and creative! Enjoy looking at some of our pieces from this term!

In RE we have been focusing upon Christianity. We have looked at some parables from the Bible, and four different types of prayers. We have looked at each symbolic meaning and message from religious stories and have practiced sequencing and reciting them. Below is our fabulous work.
Humanism
Our RE topic this term has been Humanism. We discussed Humanist views of how the earth was created and looked deeper in their ideas of "good without god" and human perserverance. Children were very mature at learning a new way of seeing our world!
